This seems to be more of a problem in flat bed scanners, BUT they do a pretty good job in that they are multifunctional and cheap. One thing we need to get used to is how these scanner companies rate Dmax and resolution. They had some files already done with the 4990 and comparing the V700 on lower res scan (and lower quality optics?) at 3200 dpi, the 4990 scans looked better to them. So in order to really take advantage of the V700 system you need serious computing power(lots of ram, big HD, fast processor) or scan smaller formats so that you don't have such huge file sizes. Apparently, the high grade optics (remember dual lens setup)are linked to the 6400 dpi setting (for optimal scanning of smaller formats maybe). At that setting the results were not as good as their measured performance of the 4990. The test was then done at 3200dpi in order to have reasonable file sizes and the true resolution was a little less than 2000 dpi. Scanning 4x5 film at 6400dpi at 48 bit rgb, the file size is 4.4GB! (one hour or more to scan) At 24 bit, 2.2 GB file size. The test showed a clear gain in resolution over the 4990 and all other scanners in that class.
